To protect your home from the insects that cause structural damage you should  make sure that you have all wood sources away from your foundation. I know its easier to reach if you put your logs for the fire pit close to the house but you are inviting bad news to your door step. Termites cause billions of dollars in damage every year, if you leave decomposing organic materials lying in your yard  Termites will find it and do what they are designed to do breakdown wood!!
